Liability insurance

Shield your business from legal and financial implications with comprehensive liability coverage.

Liability insurance

Broadform Liability Insurance combines Public and Product Liability coverage, protecting you from legal liability to pay compensation to third parties for personal injury or damage to their property.

For instance, if a tradesman incorrectly installs ceiling screws, leading to damage to a newspaper-printing press and a four-day shutdown, the tradesman could be liable for repair costs and lost production, totaling nearly $500,000.

Additional Features

  • Defence costs: Additional to the specified liability sum insured.
  • Mechanical plant: Covers liability arising from the use of tools or mechanically propelled plant during operation.
  • Compensation for court appearances: Up to $250 per day, with a maximum of $7,500.
  • Tenant’s liability: Covers damage caused to premises rented by you but not owned by you.
  • Landlord’s liability: Covers damages caused to a third party or their property as a result of any property you own but don’t occupy.
  • Property under your care, custody, or control: Up to $250,000, provided you are not receiving compensation for their storage.
  • Liability under the Forrest and Rural Fires Act: Covers costs incurred by any fire authority and costs claimed by any other party in protecting their property, up to $250,000.

Employers Liability Insurance

Employers Liability Insurance covers claims made by employees against employers for injury or illness suffered in the course of employment, not covered by the Accident Compensation Legislation (ACC). This includes mental injury, nervous shock, fright, or stress. The insurance company pays defence costs and all sums you become legally liable for, up to a selected limit, as a result of a claim for damages made against you. It equally covers the cost of investigating and defending any claim or prosecution.

Statutory Liability Insurance

Statutory Liability Insurance covers fines and defence costs imposed on you for inadvertent offences under Acts of Parliament. Common breaches affecting New Zealand businesses include those under Health and Safety (orders for reparations and defence costs only), Fair Trading Act, Building Act, and Resource Management Act. For example, if your processing plant accidentally leaks toxic substances into a nearby stream, even if your plant is constructed to required standards, you could be held responsible and fined for pollution under the Resource Management Act.
